FEATURED VIRTUAL

Hundred With, Hundred Without

Tribute to the centenary of Guimarães Rosa’s birth and the centenary of Machado de Assis’ death.

"Translating the writings of Machado and Rosa into visual arts is no easy task. From the first talks between the group of 15 artists represented in this exhibition and the direction of Casa das Rosas, we have always tried to avoid the very common tendency, in these cases, of mere illustration: having the works only portraiting some episode or passage of the narrative masters. It was sought, rather, an intersemiotic transcriation work, as Haroldo de Campos would say. "
Frederico Barbosa
Director of Casa das Rosas

Artwork Description:

Title: Myriad
The painting on canvas contains paper and fabric collages, with images of black and purple flowers. A single black butterfly appears, glued in lace fabric. Paper collages are enlarged and reduced photocopies of the books of both writers.
The canvas is suspended by a wooden rod, from where curved wires stems, that support butterflies, come out. The butterflies are cut into paper and hung by threads, of different sizes and at different heights, in front of the canvas.

Metaphoric Description:

Theme: Death as a Life renewal (present in both authors)
Black butterfly: represents the presence of death.
White butterflies on photocopied paper hung by a thread: these butterflies represent the renewal, the transformation, the metamorphosis that life is. The hanging of butterflies by a thread represents the fragility of life itself. The butterflies made on printed paper with the texts of the works cited above as references reinforce the importance of knowledge in the elevation of the human soul.

"My art talks about the feminine universe, about my dreams as a child, about the curious look kept in my memory, about the life in the countryside and the smell of wet soil, about the joy of living. I talk about the moments of loneliness, about looking at the immensity of the universe and beyond. I talk about the lived moments, about the non-lived ones, about the plots of the world, about the human being. Creating, for me, it's a necessity."
